Universities 'complacent on extremism' - Theresa May
Some strong views from our Home Secretary, read the Union's reponse here.
Theresa May calls on Universities to do more to tackle extremist groups on the eve of the Prevent strategy being published.
Theresa May's comments risk painting all students with the same brush and damaging the good, positive relationships many Students' Unions have with their student groups, including Islamic societies. While the issues the Government are addressing are serious, I would caution the Home Secretary to be mindful that the broad assertions about extremism can damage good campus relations and undermine the work undertaken by students and student societies.
For example at UCLan we have an outstanding Islamic Society that has won 'society of the year' for the last 3 years and continues to lead the way in charity work having raised over £3,000 this year.
