Fairtrade, an organisation renowned the world over for its commitment to third-world producers and independent guarantee of ethical trading standards, has come to UCLAN. In association with the Student’s Union, the university is now an officially recognised Fairtrade partner – committed not only to providing Fairtrade products for sale, but also to promote its activities and spread the cause of offering good, honest people who struggle to make a living good, honest prices.
For this, from the 24th of February, UCLAN – in conjunction with Preston Fairtrade – is participating in the Fairtrade fortnight. Events around campus, everything from a special quiz round at the source to smoothies sold at the Atrium. Each and every Fairtrade event helps support a worthy cause and, who knows, you might find a bit of fun along the way.
As well as being entertained with events such as an fair trade games and activities in the Mall and Atrium café, students also have the chance to be educated, with a screening of critically acclaimed docu-film, “Black Gold”, at the Mitchell-Kenyon Cinema, based in
Despite being a University/Students Union organized event, it’s not just students who’ll be taking part in events. Local school children are to take part in a competition to take a picture of a Fairtrade product in a strange place – the mayor of
Perhaps the biggest event taking place over the fortnight is the visit of a Honduran banana producer, who has experience of exploitation - he will be at the Students' Union at 3.15pm on Wednesday 27th February and students are encouraged to go along and meet him.
Fairtrade Fortnight, takes place from Monday 25/02 – Friday 07/03 and UCLAN is encouraging students to get involved in any way they can, from attending events to helping raise awareness of the Fairtrade initiative.
