Student Affairs Committee change for another year

It's all change as the Union's new Student Affairs Committee (SAC) take up their roles.

The new officers have already spent two weeks preparing to start in the positions and they will now begin to outline their plans for the year ahead, and make decisions on how the Union can make life better for students.

The new Student Affairs Committee for 2009/2010 are Beth Woodthorpe-Evans (President), Lindsay Bradley (Education officer), Thomas Bailey (Activities and participation officer), John Crossley (Media officer) and Samantha Hutchinson (Campaigns officer).

The Student Affairs Committee were elected on a record turnout in the student elections in March 2009, with 1,527 students voting.

The elected officers are trustees of the Students' Union, so join the trustee board and help decide the long-term future of the organisation.

The Union said goodbye and farewell to the outgoing Student Affairs Committee at the Annual Staff Conference on Thursday 25th June 2009.

The outgoing Student Affairs Committee are Gavin Jones (President), Sarah Delli-Colli (Education officer), Kelly Burdett (Activities and participation officer), Andy Squire (Media officer) and Lee Bradshaw (Campaigns officer).

Former President Gavin Jones reflected on his time as President of one of the largest Students' Unions in the country.

He said: "This year has been an incredible adventure. To have the opportunity to lead an excellent sabbatical team and represent 30,000+ UCLan Students has been an honour, and I will miss the experience I have had. I think one highlight was speaking to 3,500 people at a graduation ceremony, and it is going to be surreal I may not have opportunities such as these for quite a while. I have every faith in incoming President Beth Woodthorpe-Evans, and wish the incoming SAC the very best of luck."

Jones is now going to South Korea to teach English ahead of applying for a PGCE in 2010.

Former Education officer Sarah Delli-Colli is sad to be leaving but pleased that her experience while at the Union has helped to land her a job.

She said: "My highlight of the year has to be all the work I have done on the feedback campaign. I have learned so much from it and really feel that I have been able to make life better for students by getting the University to listen to the student voice and promise action on the subject.

"My year as an elected officer has been absolutely amazing! Extremely busy, varied, stressful at times but just a fantastic experience which I wouldn't change for the world. There is no other job like being a sabbatical officer and I would highly recommend it to anyone, so let's get a massive election next year!

"I'm not actually going far though, I have just got a job in the Leaning Development Unit in the University as a Project Coo-ordinator (Student Experience) which I am so excited about. It will be a brand new challenge which I can't wait to get my teeth in to."
