Why work for the Students’ Union?

We are an independent body here to promote the interests of over 35,000 students during their course of study at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). Our provision includes representation, support and advice and of course social and recreational activities.

In 2007 we celebrated our 50th anniversary, achieved renewal of our status as an Investor in People and achieved awards for our environmental work and our management of licensed premises. Our venue 53 Degrees is a recent winner of the BEDA student venue of the year and we achieved Fairtrade University status in early 2008.

As an employee, volunteer or trustee you will thrive on being challenged through working in a dynamic environment, interacting with a diverse range of people with unique perspectives and enjoy working for an organisation which is constantly evolving.

We believe that we offer an excellent working environment and through various avenues we constantly re-assess this. In a recent staff satisfaction survey 100 per cent of respondents said that the Union has good management, everyone receives support from colleagues, thanked for a job well done and we work in a happy atmosphere.

This was echoed in our student staff survey, where we found that 93 per cent of our student staff thought we had a good working atmosphere and many of them were able to develop useful skills alongside earning a bit of cash while studying. Download the full student staff survey 2009 results.

Our values

At the Students’ Union we work towards incorporating the following values into everything we do.

  • We are about change - not for the sake of it but because we believe that it is our job to make life better for students
  • We are for students- we are a not for profit organisation and every penny we make is ploughed back into services to students
  • We are student led- we believe it is a strength we operate in a democratic way

UCLan Students’ Union is a not for profit organisation, which means that any profit made from our commercial operations is recycled back into the Union to assist in providing better services for our student members and later this year we will register with the Charities Commission and become a registered charity.

Union people

The organisation is still growing, at the last count we employed 60 permanent staff and 200 temporary part-time staff, who are students, employed in various roles throughout the organisation.

Our promise to Union people is:

  • We recruit the best people we can
  • We positively seek to give students opportunities to work for the Union
  • We make sure people have a chance to contribute
  • We offer a fun place to work where people want to come to work
  • We promote a learning culture where people have the chance to develop
  • We are sad to see people go, but pleased they can succeed elsewhere

Union jobs

We are not currently recruiting for any positions at the moment. Keep checking back for any new vacancies as they will be posted here.
