Elections

The way in which the Students’ Union holds its elections has transformed over the past few years and they are now held online in conjunction with the Electoral Reform Service thus allowing for a secret cross campus ballot.  This is done to promote both access and fairness as voting can take place at home, on the move or in the library.

Voting takes place each year in March/April for the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) positions of President, Education Officer, Campaigns Officer, Media Officer and Activities and Participation Officer. There are also elections in the autumn semester for the position of Chair of the Students’ Council and the Council representatives from the Disabled Student, Black Student and the LGBT student body.

During the last SAC election the Students’ Union in association with the Electoral Reform Service have used the Single Transferable Vote system, which enables each voter to rate the candidates in order of preference with the votes being passed down until the final two candidates remain.
